Shopping for Fashion Magazines and Books

I've been busy and have not posted in a while! Shame on me! I'm still keeping busy but I'm going to try and give you a monthly update from now on! Thanks for your patience!

Below you will find my main spots for magazine shopping and a few magazines to look for (more on choices of magazines another time). Just a couple of tips -

1) Don't be in a rush to buy all the magazines every month. Take your time and look them over carefully. You may find that some suit your needs more than others for a particular month - so you won't have too many piles at home and you'll have money left over to purchase magazines next month!

2) Try going beyond the scope of fashion magazines to broaden your vision and creativity. The graphics in sports magazines - like surfing - can be a great inspiration for example...I definitely don't surf but I'll pick up one of the main editions once it awhile!

3) On a tight or limited budget remember that your local library carries a great deal of magazines too! You can take them home and scan the pics you like (Please be respectful of your fellow library user and library, and do not cut anything out of the magazines). Each library may have a selection of magazines that is particular to the neighbourhood. For example in a neighbourhood where there may be a large population of Spanish speaking people you will find Spanish magazines particularly for Fashion! You can find most of this information by going to the sites of your city's libraries or visit them to have a more hands-on experience.

I find that most library site can be a little complicated sometimes - so be patient or visit your local library and have a librarian help you out and eventually you'll get to know how and where you can find what you are looking for and more. Don't forget to look for fashion books - some of the libraries are very well stocked (Please note that the books are shelved in different spots and you may wonder why you don't see this large variety sometimes - Fashion Designers bio will be in the biography section, how-to - like how to draw fashion illustrations may be in the art section, the "Fashion" section is sometimes just for sewing books - it all depends on the library - so again, do a search for fashion, vs. fashion illustration vs. fashion design vs. the name of a fashion designer, etc. and see what comes up to find out where some gems might be "hidden"! And, you can take out most books for up to 3 weeks and then renew for another 2 weeks or so - it will feel like you own them! When you have a library card and a password - you can take care of it all on-line!

Toronto

FYI: Because it's predominately English speaking in TO and other English speaking cities, you will find that the bookstores like Indigo have more product - that means more books - so their fashion/art/design sections are soooo much better than in Montreal (Montreal bookstores are required to stock French and English books 50/50, so, per square foot there are less English books than you would find in the same size shop in TO or NY, etc.
